Abstract

Allusion is a rhetorical device used to intensify meaning through an implicit figurative expression that refers to an incident or a story; it is commonly used in discursive fields for the sort of significance and enigma it implies. Allusion is considered as a cultural reference since it is shared by individuals of the same culture; they unlock, perceive and use it in a new contexts. Allusion is so impressive that it creates pleasure, humour and excitement as it strengthens the communicative interaction and persuasion. This study attempts at tackling the challenges of translating allusion from Arabic into English in the literary field specifically political and sarcastic articles. It is an empirical study based on the translation of eight articles extracted from " قلوبهم معنا وقنابلهم علينا " By Ahlam MOSTEGHANEMI. The articles include samples of allusion all analyzed and translated on the basis of a modal proposed by Ritva LEPPIHALME to translate Proper Names and Key Phrases allusions. Theoretically, the study is founded on the socio-cultural and functional approaches presented in the Skopos theory and the text Type theory.
